The short answer
Cinopsys works without an account and syncs with Trakt, Simkl, MDBList and WeTrakr, with statistics, widgets, filters and notifications built in. Moviebase, Showly, Cinexplore and SeriesGuide each suit a different priority: a Material You look, open source, a light Trakt client, or TV-first tracking.
A movie and TV tracker should do one simple thing well: remember everything you've watched and everything you want to watch, then get out of your way. Plenty of apps do that, but what each one asks of you varies. Some show ads. Some put statistics, widgets or extra lists behind a purchase. Some need an account before they'll do anything at all.
What a tracker should actually include
Before the list, here's the bar we held each app to. A tracker worth your time should give you:
- Movies and TV in one place — episode-level progress, watchlists and history.
- Nothing intrusive between you and your list.
- Real statistics — hours watched, genres, ratings, activity over time.
- Sync you control — optional Trakt, Simkl, MDBList or WeTrakr sync, and a backup you own.
- Quality-of-life features — filters, a release calendar, notifications, widgets.
Movie & TV trackers compared
Cinopsys Standalone or synced
Cinopsys is a movie and TV tracker that works completely standalone with no account. Detailed statistics, flexible filters, a release calendar with per-type notifications, home-screen widgets and gradient theming are built in. It can back up to your own Google Drive, and it syncs with Trakt, Simkl, MDBList and WeTrakr — your watch history and watchlist stay in step both ways.
Includes: statistics, widgets, filters and alerts.
Moviebase
Moviebase is polished, with Material You theming and widgets, and it syncs with Trakt. Its browsing and discovery come from TMDB — the same public database Cinopsys and most trackers use, so it isn't really a point of difference. The catch: it's ad-supported, and according to Moviebase itself its Premium plan removes the ads and adds detailed statistics, personal recommendations and no limits on lists, watchlists or episode progress.
Free includes: tracking, discovery, Trakt sync. Paid: Premium removes ads and adds detailed statistics and personal recommendations.
Showly Open-source Trakt client
Showly is a clean, open-source Trakt client now maintained under Trakt itself. If you value open source and a straightforward Trakt experience, it's lovely. It's Trakt-only — no Simkl, no standalone library — and the app is ad-supported, with an optional Showly Premium (news section, light theme, custom images, quick rate).
Free includes: Trakt tracking, clean UI. Trade-offs: ads; Trakt account required.
Cinexplore Lightweight option
Cinexplore is a light, good-looking Trakt client with Material 3 theming and customizable colours. It nails the essentials and stays out of your way. Like Showly it's Trakt-only and ad-supported, with an optional Premium upgrade, and its statistics are basic compared with Cinopsys or Moviebase.
Free includes: Trakt tracking, theming. Trade-offs: ads; Trakt-only; lighter on stats.
SeriesGuide For TV-first power users
SeriesGuide is a long-running, open-source app focused on television, with strong episode management and Trakt sync. It's a favourite of TV completionists. Some features sit behind an optional subscription unlock, and it's more TV-centric than movie-centric.
Free includes: TV tracking, Trakt sync. Paid: a subscription unlocks Cloud sync, episode notifications, multiple watches and more.
TV Time For the social side
TV Time was popular for its social feed, reactions and big community, but it shut down on July 15, 2026 and deleted all personal data. We keep it here only so you know what became of it — if you used it, see what happened to your data and what to do with an export.
Status: shut down on July 15, 2026.

Our take
Cinopsys is a good fit if you want standalone use or a choice of four sync services: your data backed up to your own Drive, and Trakt, Simkl, MDBList and WeTrakr sync — or no account at all. The others are good at specific things, so pick the one that matches what you need.
